Employment Categories

NSC is a member institution of the Nevada System of Higher Education (NSHE) and as such is bound by the NSHE Board of Regents Code (BOR).

Executive Faculty, Administrative Faculty, and Academic Faculty, commonly referred to as “professional employees” include the administration and instructional faculty of NSC. Rights and privileges of these employees are defined in the BOR.

NSHE has adopted the State of Nevada Classified employment system as the method to define support staff. Rights and privileges of the classified staff are defined in Chapter 284 of the Nevada Revised Statues (NRS), the BOR, and the Nevada Administrative Code (NAC).

Temporary Part-time Faculty, commonly referred to as “Letters of Appointment” are defined in the BOR, Title 4, Chapter 3, Section 39. These temporary exempt positions are primarily used to supplement the Academic Faculty as Part-time Instructors but may also be used to accommodate temporary part-time professional non-teaching duties and awards.

Hourly employees at NSC are divided into four (4) categories:

  • 160 Hour Non-Student employee
  • 1,000 Hour Non-Student employee
  • Student Workers
  • Student Work-Study Worker

NRS 284.325 defines temporary service appointments limiting the employment of individuals in temporary hourly employees to no more than 160 hours in any one calendar year. Individuals hired to work in temporary hourly appointments not meeting the requirements as a Student Worker are held to this limit.

The NRS also allows for certain exemptions to the 160-hour limitation. Individuals hired to work for a research center in NSHE or hired into a position that recurs periodically for the registration of students or a person hired to provide assistance to students with a disability or academic disadvantage. Individuals hired per these exemptions are limited to 1,000 hours in any one calendar year.

Additionally, the NRS allows for students working on NSHE campus to be exempt from the 160-hour limitation. These individuals are hired as student Workers and Student Work-Study employees. They are limited to work less than twenty (20) hours per week while school is in session. Student Work-Study employees are individuals who have been awarded Work-Study money through the financial aid office. These individuals will have a portion of their salaries paid by the financial aid office up to the limit of their award.
