Note Taker/Student Volunteer Information
Learn the benefits of becoming a note taker for students with disabilities in your C.L.A.S.S.es.
Students may be approached by other students in a C.L.A.S.S. and asked if they will take notes for them. Other times, the professor may request for a volunteer to take notes for another student.
The Center for Learning Assistance and Support Services (C.L.A.S.S.) provides federally mandated services to students with disabilities attending C.L.A.S.S.es at the College. As a volunteer Note Taker, the volunteering student will be responsible for the provision of C.L.A.S.S.room notes for a specific student. The volunteer Note Taker is not required to provide any additional assistance outside the scheduled C.L.A.S.S. time. Note Taking is a required accommodation under the Americans with Disabilities Act and is vital to the student’s success in this C.L.A.S.S.. Notebooks with carbonless paper will be given to the Note Taker through the C.L.A.S.S. office, so notes may be provided to the student after each C.L.A.S.S. session. In lieu of cash payment, the Note Taker will receive a $100.00 tuition credit for future coursework taken at Nevada State College, to be directly applied towards their outstanding fees the following term.
Traditional volunteer Note Taker services are welcome as well. Traditional volunteers will receive a Certificate of Appreciation and may include the service on a resume, or apply the time encumbered towards service hours, if applicable.
If the Note Taker drops the course or cannot fulfill the duties, it is the Note Taker’s responsibility to notify the C.L.A.S.S. office immediately. The tuition credit will be prorated by dividing the $100.00 credit by the total number of weeks in the term to determine a weekly rate. The Note Taker will receive a tuition credit at the weekly rate for the number of weeks note taking services were provided. Note Taking services do not replace the student’s attendance to the course. If a student is absent for two or more consecutive C.L.A.S.S.es please notify the C.L.A.S.S. office.
For information about taking notes for a student with a disability, please contact the C.L.A.S.S. office at 992-2003 to make an appointment to complete the application process.
